How do you stop the rushing-wind noise that microphones pick up on a windy day?

A microphone windscreen reduces wind, breath sounds and popping noises.  It’s essentially a foam cover for the top part of the mic.  The foam prevents breath and wind noise by dispersing the rush of air throughout the foam.  If the wind is too strong for a simple foam screen, then a professional sound engineer can address it directly from the mixing console.
